Calculate Your MPG (Miles Per Gallon)

Enter the information below to see if you are getting good mileage!

Miles per gallon is the measure of how many miles an automobile can travel for every gallon of gas. The higher the miles per gallon, the cheaper the vehicle is to operate.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates that by 2025, average fuel economy will be about 28 miles per gallon for cars and 37 miles per gallon for light trucks. This average is an improvement from the 2016 figure of 24 miles per gallon for cars and 30 miles per gallon for light trucks. Just one year ago, the EPA estimated that in 2040, fuel economy would only reach 27 miles per gallon for cars and 36 miles per gallon for light trucks.

The average American car gets around 22.5 miles per gallon, and the average price of gas has increased over the past few years to $2.69 per gallon according to AAA. However, if you take a look at data from The United States Department of Transportation, we see that there's been an increase in the number of hybrid cars on the road which are roughly 50% more efficient.

The average mpg in America is around 25 mpg, but hybrids get up to 50-60. Many factors can alter your fuel efficiency, including driving habits, terrain, and vehicle weight. Fuel efficiency usually increases with the size of the engine. Although it may not seem like much at first, small speed changes can make a big difference in your fuel efficiency.

In the last ten years, fuel efficiency standards have been changed to reflect a more realistic standard of gas mileage. In 1973, the national average was around 12 miles per gallon. In 1978, this number had fallen to 9.5 miles per gallon. However, in 2012, it has jumped back up to 25 miles per gallon. These changes have been made possible by a variety of innovations including using lighter materials and more efficient engines as well as vehicle electronics that reduce drag at highway speeds.
