What is BMI?

BMI is a medical measurement that estimates body fat based on height and weight. It is the most widely used measurement for obesity and health risk in adults.

BMI can indicate if someone is underweight, overweight, or obese. BMI should be the starting point for determining healthy weight ranges rather than an endpoint for determining the ideal weight.

Weight categories are relative; people should be encouraged to maintain a healthy BMI by actively engaging in physical activities and following recommended dietary changes.

What does BMI tell us about your health?

BMI is a measurement tool used to determine a person's body fat based on their height and weight. BMI can be used to track if you are too heavy or too thin, but it does not tell you the exact amount of total body fat that a person has.

In general, people with a BMI less than 18.5 are considered underweight. The BMI range goes from 18.5 to 24.9 for people with healthy weight, 25-29.9 for overweight, and 30 or higher for obesity.

How to Calculate BMI for Yourself and Others

A person’s weight in kilograms and their height in meters squared are used to calculate BMI, which is BMI = kg/m2.

While the formula may be simple, it is important to understand how the BMI is calculated. The formula uses the weight of the individual, in kilograms or pounds, divided by their height, in centimeters or feet/inches. For example, someone who weighs 80 kilograms and stands is 180 centimeters tall has a BMI of 24.69.
